Lessons from a House on Fire

My friend Chris' house burned down at 11:50a today, he was home & his stove pipe which had just been repaired the night before, caught on fire & he tried to fight it himself during the TWENTY minutes it took for firetruck to get there! He lived on the Hudson River in Riparius, about 4 miles from me.

He's ok but his 6 cats are running wild, he only found one [UPDATE: All were found & safely adopted out]. They are outdoor cats so even if I could take one or two, they would be miserable (I won't let cats out) & mine would be defenseless against them as Romeo is declawed & does not have the shots for contact with other animals or outdoor illnesses. The only no kill shelter I know of can't take them all & again, being outdoor cats would be misery to be caged most of the time in shelter. One is a purebred Bengal. No idea what to do, the cats are used to being on their own but they love human attention & indoor warmth too.

Anyway, Kevin came over to clean my car off & Chris showed up & pitched in, killing me with kindness, a guy that just lost everything & still in shock, helping me. He showed me a picture of the house, the firemen actually caused 90% more damage & totaled the house, than the fire itself did (started on second floor). He used up 2 fire extinguishers & water waiting for them (20 minutes!). I heard the alarm here when rescue trucks went out there. [Pic below is not from his house but is from the net].

So many lessons can be learned from this. Check that your fire extinguishers are up to date & enough to counter a blaze, including one made for electronic equipment such as computers and stereo's. Make sure life & house insurance are in effect (his was NOT!). Cleaning creosote every season is a MUST-no spending money on other things 1st. Finding ways to keep busy & surrounded with friends during such a nightmare situation. Learning to accept help from others.

What other lessons can be learned from this, for yourself or others?

When I was 8 my entire house burned down days before Xmas while we were out of state. We came home to nothing but ashes literally, sifting through for teeny sections of photographs; nothing else, including all the gifts under tree, was left & our large family was split up all over US because no one could take us all in together.

When I was 12 my mom set her bed on fire passed out drunk smoking a cig & I was in an attic bedroom, everyone else on ground floor. That saved their lives, the smoke woke me & I was able to get them out of the burning bed & save most of the house too. I'm extremely conscious of fire, cigs (others & mine), smoke, etc, but Kevin considers it paranoid. Not when you survive it twice, it's not, and it's not something I think about because I have ingrained safety habits learned from those experiences, but when others are careless with cigs or hot ashes, I speak up & go on alert. Wouldn't you? Oh & I never smoke in bed.

Sad time of year to see a friend going through this & it's the 1st time in decades I've remembered my own xmas season fire losses. Guess being so up close & personal brought back the emotions of that Xmas fire at 8 years old. Good to remember & be grateful.

Lynne's Birthday Bash with Live Bands 11-29-13

Last Friday night, 11-29-13, Lynne celebrated her birthday with a private house party & hired Willie Playmore Band to rock the house down from about 8p-12:30a. Members of Flipside (all but Frank) also joined in for much of a set. I've just finished uploading all the videos, editing & sharing. This is my final step in the process, sharing here. Usually I have this full review, but this time I wanted to get these out there first.

I'll add more details this week, but for now, enjoy the live music videos :)

Thanks for the great time Lynne! Playlist of videos below pics....

Chuck Kelsey LIVE 10-11-13

On Oct. 11, 2013 Chuck Kelsey performed a live solo acoustic performance at Panther Mountain Inn, Chestertown, NY from 8:30p to 12:30a. Using a loop pedal he was able to add elements to his show without using prerecorded elements, making this one acoustic performance I highly enjoyed.

Below is an original song Chuck performed live, off his CD Remember The Shadows.

Who's Your Paddy P-House 8-30-13

On Friday Aug. 30, 2013, Who's Your Paddy performed live Irish & American folk music classics & covers by more modern bands like Green Day, at the Panther Mountain Inn, Chestertown, NY from 8p-12a. Made up of 3 men playing guitar/vocals (Steve Gray), a Bodrhan and a keyboard/fiddle/backup vocals, to a mixed crowd of 20 somethings and 60+ somethings, it was my 1st time seeing their show.

The band does not have a dedicated website, or images, so I regret not bringing my big camera to get a few professional shots of the guys. Instead I found some of these funny images representing the fun this group incites with their music, & it made me want to drink green beer & dance an Irish jig!

Collette & the Mudcats 8-23-13 Blues that Rock

[Collette's little voodoo mic stand]

On Friday 8-23-13 Collette & the Mudcats performed from 8p-12a, at Panther Mountain Inn, Chestertown, NY, with a wicked blues rhythm to all their songs. Extremely talented musicians and vocalists, harmonica & guitar playing that blows one's mind, you don't want to miss seeing them live if you ever get the chance. Midnight seemed to come way too soon, every song was stunning, no one wanted to leave the room for fear of missing something. I hope we'll be seeing a lot more of them soon!

The playlist of all videos from their shows starts with this video introduction to the members of the band below, with newest show videos at top and older shows last. Further down this page, I've embedded my fave video/song (Mulehead cover) of the night, and the band info/links.

The harmonica on this Mulehead cover is just frigging incredible! I believe his name was Joe and he only sat in for a few songs, we all missed him when he left, as his harp playing really made the music hit harder, deeper and added a flavor that goes with blues like salt does pepper.

Contact the band for info & bookings, check out their original music and more at the following links:

Frank Palangi Live at P-House 8-16-13

Frank Palangi performed Friday Aug. 16, 2013 in Chestertown, NY at the Panther Mountain Inn pub, from 8p-12a. Frank is a songwriter and accomplished musician with 3 albums released so far of original songs & recently opened for Alice in Chains & Jane's Addiction at SPAC. Winner of many awards, he is one of the most stunningly talented and hard working artists I've ever known.

Frank is friendly & enjoys riling up the crowd & satisfying fans wherever he goes. This night there were a few out of town fans who traveled up to see him play live, Joelle Tanner and her mother, pictured below, posing with Frank on one of his performance breaks. Does anyone know an artist who just opened for big name famous bands one week, and posing with fans in rural upstate NY the next? Then he signed just about every CD he sold at the show, including mine of course.

In his early 20's, he appears as such a young innocent, that when the heavy metal growling kicks in, one wonders how he does it, so slight of frame, and with a big smile on his face, he floors audiences, and wins them over, wherever he goes, including a bar used to a more sedate repertoire of music like country, folk and blues. The younger AND older patrons welcomed him with open arms, appreciating the freshness and energy as well as his sound.

If you get a chance to see him perform, don't miss it! See below for videos, playlist and more!

July 4th 2013 Weekend Car Show, Fireworks & Bands

July 4th 2013 Weekend Car Show, Bands & Fireworks Festival

[All Photography by Gina Jordan, all rights reserved.]

This July 4th was an incredibly busy week in my area, with many free events held in Chestertown & North Creek, NY as well as surrounding towns. I attended, photographed & filmed the Car & Bike Show Friday plus the live band Cosmic Jackson the same evening at Panther Mountain Inn, Chestertown, NY; then the North Creek, NY fireworks & music festival, Ski Bowl Park at Gore Mountain where live music played all afternoon through after the 24-minute fireworks.

Some of the bands & events I covered included the Car & Bike show, Decadence, Cosmic Jackson, MTV Band, plus many more I didn't film. The videos are linked & shown at the bottom of this post.

The Car & Bike entries were nearly all new-to-me (& the show/area) vehicles including a 1937 Chevy Coupe, A Ural Wolf and Harley Davidson Trike. [See album link below].

[Fireworks image I captured 7-6-13]

I decided not to upload the 24 minute long fireworks video this year, having chosen a boggy field (after dark so I couldn't see where I was laying down, lol) to lay my blanket in, I was covered in dozens of mosquitos, and could not hold still. So I gave up photographing well before the finale, sad to say. Next time, I need to bathe in bug spray first, and watch where I put my blanket, as laying right under the fireworks was not a good perspective for filming, not to mention getting covered with flaming ashes! I laugh at my screw ups, so you can too.

[Sunset in North Creek, NY 7-6-13]

For all the photos from the Festival fireworks & bands
see my Flickr album at:

One of the great features at North Creek Ski Bowl was the snowmaking machine that ran all day into the night, keeping everyone more than comfy with an icy mist. As a result, that night was one of the coolest in weeks in this area, at least in the Ski Bowl. I feel sorry for the rest of the region without such relief available. See the panorama video below for the snowmaker in action on the slope.

[MTV Band covering Some Kind of Wonderful, with panorama view of the crowd]

Cosmic Jackson, one of my top favorite local bands, performed Friday night from 9p to 1a at Panther Mountain Inn's pub, Chestertown, NY. A jam band that often plays 7+ minute long songs, mostly classic rock & blues, I'm often mesmerized by Chris Schempp on the lead guitar. I only uploaded 2 videos from their show that night, and one from their festival performance the following evening after the fireworks.

For Cosmic Jackson band info, see http://www.cosmicjackson.com/home.html

For Decadence Band Info, see http://www.reverbnation.com/decadencemusic1

Panther Mountain Inn provides free live music every Friday night in the pub (for adults of course) and free car show events monthly (family friendly!), so come on up and join the fun.

This coming Weds. July 10, 2013 I'll be filming the downtown music festival here in Chestertown, NY as well, with 2 free live bands from 4-8:30p, Flipside & The Master Cylinders, all are welcome to come and enjoy the evening at this family friendly event.

And last, a video of me enjoying myself Friday night doing shots with "dirty" names, lol. Thanks Cheryl & Willie ;-)

Finger Diddle LIVE 6-28-13

On June 28th, 2013 the band Finger Diddle performed live at the Panther Mountain Inn, Chestertown, NY from about 8p-12a. This was the 1st time I got to film them in the 2 years I've been in the area. There are 7 videos/songs from their show, plus 2 of a cool 1956 Chevy that was parked outside.

Playing acoustic electric guitar with a drummer, both doing vocals, Finger Diddle performed several blues songs, classic rock and even a Led Zeppelin I missed getting on film unfortunately.

Classic Car Show & Willie Playmore Band 6-21-13

[1st place trophy winner Michael Maresca with his family proudly standing in front of the 1970 Zenith level SS Chevelle he has had since he was a boy, all original parts except exhaust and only 8K miles, wow!]

 [1920 Model-T]

An awesome Friday night here in Chestertown, NY at the Panther Mountain Inn & Pub, starting with a classic car show from 5:30-9p, then Willie Playmore Band performed their classic & southern rock jams from 8p-12:30a. With a full moon, and so much excitement at these free events, it's no wonder everyone is smiling and laughing in my videos from the night. Below are videos and playlists of the cars and band, all in one place.

These events are free and all are welcome to attend. The classic car shows are held monthly & there are live bands playing every Friday night with no cover charge at door, so plan a night up in the southern Adirondacks for you and the whole family, enter your own muscle or classic car into the show, or just come watch & vote for your top 3 faves to win trophies for that month's show.

[2nd place winner, Chevy Impala owned by Holly Palmer]

Some of the vehicles featured were a 50's GMC Pickup, a 60's Ford Fairlane, several 60's SS Chevelles (it seemed to be a Chevy heavy evening!), 70's Corvettes (& newer), a gorgeous El Camino, Malibu, Impala, and a 1920's Model-T just to name a few! To end the car show, all the entry vehicles do a cruise through town, a thrill to see and hear all these throbbing engines running down the road.

[3rd place winner SS Chevelle owned by Holly's Dad, Palmer]

I rode in the lead 1978 red convertible Corvette, filming the entire ride from every angle, and embarrassing myself with my giddy giggles and joy, but I don't care ;-)  Where would you like to see me ride in the next show?

Below is the playlist of the 9 car show videos I did last night, in 1080i HD:

After the excitement of the car show, it was a relief to sit in the air-conditioned pub and watch one of my favorite local bands, Willie Playmore, performing classic & southern rock hits until the wee hours.

Below is a playlist of the 2013 videos I've filmed of them so far, starting with the 4 from last night:

I Saw You (Biker's Poem) Look Twice Save a Life

I SAW YOU
biker poem

I saw you,
hug your purse closer to you in the grocery store line.

But, you didn't see me,
put an extra $10.00 in the collection plate last Sunday.

I saw you,
pull your child closer when we passed each other on the sidewalk.

But, you didn't see me,
playing Santa at the local mall.

I saw you,
change your mind about going into the restaurant.

But, you didn't see me,
attending a meeting to raise more money for the hurricane relief.

I saw you,
roll up your window and shake your head when I drove by.

But, you didn't see me,
driving behind you when you flicked your cigarette butt out the car window.

I saw you,
frown at me when I smiled at your children.

But, you didn't see me,
when I took time off from work to run toys to the homeless.

I saw you,
stare at my long hair.

But, you didn't see me,
and my friends cut ten inches off for Locks of Love.

I saw you,
roll your eyes at our leather coats and gloves.

But, you didn't see me,
and my brothers donate our old coats and gloves to those that had none.

I saw you,
look in fright at my tattoos.

But, you didn't see me,
cry as my children where born and have their name written over and in my heart.

I saw you,
change lanes while rushing off to go somewhere.

But, you didn't see me,
going home to be with my family.

I saw you,
complain about how loud and noisy our bikes can be.

But, you didn't see me,
when you were changing the CD and drifted into my lane.

I saw you,
yelling at your kids in the car.

But, you didn't see me,
pat my child's hands, knowing he was safe behind me.

I saw you,
reading the newspaper or map as you drove down the road.

But, you didn't see me,
squeeze my wife's leg when she told me to take the next turn.

I saw you,
race down the road in the rain.

But, you didn't see me,
get soaked to the skin so my son could have the car to go on his date.

I saw you,
run the yellow light just to save a few minutes of time.

But, you didn't see me,
trying to turn right.

I saw you,
cut me off because you needed to be in the lane I was in.

But, you didn't see me,
leave the road.

I saw you,
waiting impatiently for my friends to pass.

But, you didn't see me.
I wasn't there.

I saw you,
go home to your family.

But, you didn't see me.
Because, I died that day you cut me off.

I was just a biker,.....

A person with friends and a family.

BUT, YOU DIDN'T SEE ME
